With Nokia laying the foundation
stone for its $150 million mobile phone plant in Chennai, India in
March, there is sort of race to among major handset manufacturers to
set up their manufacturing units in India.
According to our sources, apart from Nokia, other manufacturers like
Ericsson, Motorola, EMS-giant Foxconn, Flextronics and Elcoteq are
either setting up or have declared plans to set up their
manufacturing units in India. Foxconn plans to invest 110 million US
Dollar in a PCB production and a Research & Development center in the
region. 10,000 people will be employed at Foxconn's new plant.
Chennai has recently become a major destination for many foreign
companies due to availability of large-scale skilled technical
personnel. Exciting times ahead for
telecommunications companies in India ! Global high-tech companies
increasingly focussing on India, following country's stupendous growth
forecasts and country of 400 mn strong middle class population adding
over 200,000 mobile customers every month.
